Multi
Camera production is used in a variety of productions. Multi Camera helps catch
live action like in the Olympic games. With Multi camera the cameras are set up
in different locations so that they can increase the number of shots. Multi camera is used in many different types of products such as; Live sport, music concerts, public events, studio production, game shows, chat shows, soaps, sitcoms and news magazines. In this essay i'm going to be talking about talk shows, live events and
Multi
camera is used is to capture a single take without having to stop and start the
action. These are a good advantage if you wanted to do quick edits and are
doing a fast paste show. For example in soap Operas like Hollyoaks. They have a
half an hour show everyday, so by using multi camera the edits gets done
quicker. On the other hand though the
setting up of the equipment takes a lot longer than when you are doing single
camera, the reason for this is because of the amount of equipment that is
needed.
The Jeremy Kyle show
The Jeremy Kyle Show gets shown on ITV at 9 and also on ITV2 at 2 o'clock. The Jeremy Kyle show is a studio production multi camera. It's a really simple set up with a stage with a couple of chairs which the people sit on, an audience and the cameras behind the main stage.
At the beginning of Jeremy Kyle there is a montage of whats coming up most of the shots are mid shots or medium close ups. It then starts with a wide shot of the audience with the subtitle of the story and then does a pan shot of the audience which is done by a camera being mounted onto a crane. It then cuts to a long shot of Jeremy walking down the stairs.
With the jeremy Kyle show they use a lot of close ups to get the different perspectives of the guests and so that the audience at home feel involved with the story. There is a lot of shouting and close ups and mid shots of Jeremy's face and the audiences to keep the viewer interested.
A disadvantage for a studio production like the Jeremy Kyle is that the lighting is always the same and can't alternate them much. Also they are limited to the same amount of space and set for each show so doesn't give them much to go off. But with the Jeremy Kyle they go behind the set when the people walk off and use as much space as possible. This also keeps the viewers interested because there is always a camera on the action. The visual style of the Jeremy Kyle is a soft high key lighting and normally do crane shots of the audience.
With a talk show there is a lot of close ups, and mid shots and quite a simple layout and not many cameras because of how small the studio is, whereas if you compare a live event such as the Olympics there were so many cameras because of the amount of different events and activities that were going on at the same time. For example there would be about 7 or 8 cameras just on one event. The advantage of this is that for the viewer at home who were unable to go and see the event they would be able to catch the action and get to feel like they are there.

This is only a small number of cameras that was just on one event as you can see there is a heck of a lot more compared to the amount that they use in a studio production, the reason for this is because its a live event they want to capture the best shots to make the viewer feel like they are there. You would have a load of cameras surround the event. A disadvantage of using multi camera is that the cameras can come in shot and cant be avoided especially when there is a huge number of them.
As you can see from the clip of the opening ceremony of the Olympic games and how big the event was, the amount of cameras that probably were there capturing different angles must of been a lot, so that they don't miss any action out, and so that they get different camera angles. The visual style of is very simple and the paste isn't that fast unlike in the Jeremy Kyle when it captures the action. The shots are really specific to the event as you an see, whereas in another live event such as a football match the paste of the editing goes with the the paste of the ball. A football match uses multi- camera techniques is for it's visual style, because of the quick fast paste shots for example going from a long shot of one of the players running up the pitch then it going straight into a mid-shot of them shooting, then a shot of the audience and there reactions. This keeps the audience on there feet hoping for that goal. It also makes the audience feel like they are there. As you can see from the link below it shows you how quick the camera can change so fast. The shots of the camera makes the viewer interested and keeps them on there feet. If the match was done on a single camera then it would be boring and you wouldn't get the same shots as you would with multi camera. As you can see from the picture there is so many cameras that they can have the camera on each detail.

| This is the camera layout of what you would normally see on a football pitch you would also have a lot more camera on the outside of the audience but you would normally have up too 25 camera surrounding the arena. |

| This just shows how many cameras there are on the sound mixing and how quick they can go from each camera. |

With a music concert they normally consist of 7-10 cameras to get every angles possible, it's a bit like a live event but with not as many cameras. I choosen to do Emily Sande, with her performance the camera mainly focuses on a close up of her face because of how slow and emotion in the song and there isn't much action on the stage apart from Emily herself and the choir. The visual style of the video is slow paste and very calm. With the close up on her face you can feel the emotion and the camera picks up on it really well. The coverage of the action shows lots of different camera angles so that the viewer can feel part of the show like they are there. To maintain the viewers interest they use the multi camera to get a variety of shots. The camera cuts to the music of the song like with the Emily Sande as she stopped singing it cuts to another camera. By using more than one camera it covers all aspects of the concert so that they don't have to re film it but also get the crowds reaction when watching her.
